Gronant Dunes is an SSSI best known for its Little Tern colony, the largest in Wales. There is a lovely walk through dunes and pools to the beach breeding site. As well as the Terns, we will be looking out for Reed Warblers, Stonechats, Reed Buntings and Ringed Plovers. The area also hosts orchids, Sand Lizards and Natterjack Toads.
Meet at the free public car park on Shore Road ready for a 10am departure.

Note that the post code appears to cover the whole of Shore Road. So look for the car park on the left, approximately 200 yards after turning into the road. If you reach the end of the road and Presthaven caravan park, you’ve gone too far!
Directions:
You can either take the Dee Crossing and follow the A548 coastal road towards Prestatyn, passing though Flint, Bagilt, Greenfield, Mostyn, Ffynnongroy.
Or use the A55 from Queensferry. Turn off at the Holywell junction and go down to the coastal road at Greenfield. Turn left and follow the A548 coastal road towards Talacre and Prestatyn.
Note: beware of (average) speed cameras all along the coast road!!!
At the Talacre roundabout, take first exit and follow the A548 for c. 1.5 miles; pass through a set of traffic lights; then turn right at second traffic lights, on to Shore Road. There is a signpost for Lower Gronant and Presthaven, and a brown sign for Gronant Dunes and Presthaven Beach Resort.
The car park is located after c. 200 yards on left hand side, as you reach shops.
Relatively flat paths, some minor climbs over the dunes.
No public toilets, but there is a cafe with customer toilets opposite the car park.
As there is no shelter on the walk, please text or WhatsApp me a day or two before the day of the trip if you are coming. Then if the weather forecast is bad, I can advise everyone of “Plan B”! But hopefully it won’t come to that.
Please contact me if you have any questions.
