Woods, hills and crags, together with the Shropshire Union canal, make for mixed habitats for birds.
Beeston Castle is visible for miles around, standing high over the Cheshire Plain at the North end of the Peckforton Hills, part of The Sandstone Trail. Its rocky crags are home to Peregrine and Raven, while the surrounding farmland and woods are home to many migrants and smaller birds. The Shropshire Union Canal provides a water corridor through the area and will be familiar to those who have enjoyed the “Club Canal Boat Experience”.
We will be taking a circular walk of about 4 miles from Beeston Castle car park (Pay and Display £3 for the day unfortunately) with a route past The Shady Oak P.H. on the canalside. There are facilities at the castle and the Shady Oak.

Take the A51 from Chester past Tarvin and Tarporley to Four Lanes End cross roads (traffic lights) where you turn right on the A49 which takes you over the canal. Shortly afterwards turn Right up Dean Bank to the Beeston Castle car park.
