Cilcain

A circular walk up to the ridge of the Clwydian range.

Meet at 10am at the car parking along the road going west out of Cilcain centre.

Post Code CH7 5PB is the nearest I can find.  But this may not be exact as the parking is in the middle of no-where!

Your SatNav may show different routes to the destination, but I think the easiest is as follows:

Follow A540 Chester Road to 2 Mills, then turn right onto the A550/A494 towards Queensferry bypass.

Exit J33B onto A494 to Mold.

Take 2nd exit at New Brighton roundabout onto A5119 into Mold (not Mold by-pass).

Entering Mold, take 4th exit at roundabout onto Hall View/A541

Follow A541 for a few hundred yards, then turn left at mini roundabout onto Dreflan, then shortly after turn right onto Gwernaffield Road, towards Gwernaffield, Pantymwyn, Cilcain.

Follow for 4 miles to Cilcain.

Entering Cilcain on Cilcain Road, go straight across the staggered crossroads in the village centre (White Horse Inn on the right).

Carry on for c. 800 metres, passing St Mary’s Church on the left.

Ignore first turn left just after church, carry on to second turn on left, and car parking bays are 200 yards on the right (opposite entrance drive to “Famau Cabins”).

Shown by drawn line on attached map.

Be aware, there is a second parking area a little further on that you may arrive at first if you come from a different direction!  This one is marked on map as “Cilcain Car Park”.

The plan is to take our lunch with us, and make a circular route up to the foothills of the Clywydian Range.  Around 3 miles, a mix of quiet roads, tracks and footpaths.  Slow incline outwards, downhill return, but we can take our time.  The breeding season is largely over by now, but we may see Wheatear, Redstart even Cuckoo if we are very lucky.  But in any case it is a lovely walk with stunning views.

If the current weather forecast proves right (not guaranteed!!!), it will be hot and sunny with little shade, so take water, sun cream, hats etc.

There are no facilities on the walk but there are toilets in the Cilcain Village Community Centre. CH7 5NN.
