A favourite over-wintering location.
The River Dee comes alive in winter with the arrival of migrants some of which have travelled many hundreds of miles and other that have made shorter journeys to avail themselves of our hospitality. From the north coast of our peninsular up the estuary to Chester, numbers and variety are tremendous. On this occasion we are meeting at Denhall between Neston and Burton, close to Burton Mere Wetlands. Expect to see big numbers of geese, ducks and other water fowl along with other smaller birds that the marsh supports. Of course Marsh and Hen Harriers can be expected along with Short-eared Owls, another winter speciality. Merlin can be spotted by those with keen eyesight.
Meet at 10.00 on the front at Denhall. We will walk along the well made path (cycle route – be aware) as far as The Harp public house before returning the same way. Net’s café is passed and does decent refreshment if required but is popular with cyclists. Weather on the day will dictate any further activity. Burton Mere Wetlands (RSPB) is handy for the afternoon or alternatively a walk along the road to Burton Point if the day is fair. Apart from the above, there is no shelter en route but the ground is good underfoot and walking boots should suffice.
Directions
From Two Mills take A540 (N) and look for Dunstan Lane on the left (traffic lights) which takes you to Burton. Go through Burton and take Station Road on left which takes you down to the front.
Alternatively, if approaching from North take signposted route through Neston towards Ness Gardens. Past Ness Gardens, the first road on the right is Denhall Lane and takes you down to the front.
