Walk out to the island, and stay over high tide.
Visits to Hilbre over the tide have been abandoned in recent years because of bad weather, a fire which resulted in the closure of the islands and more recently Covid. Access to the sea-watching hide and the bird observatory has not been sought due to the Covid hazard which is still with us. Similarly we would ask members to remember distancing rules on the walk out and back and also while on the island.
Possible sightings include passage migrants, returning waders and the results of sea watching. Atlantic grey seals should be showing their curiosity about us.
This is a full day on the island while the tide surrounds us. High Water 12.05hrs. Depart and return times are dependent on the tide. We start walking out from West Kirby at 09.00. Once on the island we will be unable to leave until about 15.00.
Members should take notice of weather forecasts and pack appropriate clothing and bring food and drink sufficient for the day.
We are now being advised that none of the buildings on Hilbre are open for use by anyone, until the Council (Assets and Public Health) says so.
That includes the Day Room and the toilets.
The public toilets at the bottom of Dee Lane are out of action at the time of writing (23/08/21) and require payment when serviceable. There is a new eatery close to our meeting point (The Sail Loft), quality/cost unknown.
The walk to and from Hilbre is mostly across sand with some muddy rocks to contend with. Parts of the route will be wet. Bare feet are not recommended. Sandals, old trainers or wellies are good but it is nice to have warm dry feet while you are on the island.
Free on-road parking on South Parade (and elsewhere) or pay and display in Dee Lane (£4.70 all day. Payment by bank card).
