On the inland side of Hoylake are a group of marshy fields called the Langfields. This area often floods in winter and can hold a selection of wildfowl and waders. Along the hedgerows you’ll find smaller passerines. At the south end lies Gilroy Nature Park, an area of scrub and woodland surrounding a small lake.
There are advanced plans to turn this whole area into a superb wetland nature reserve, so it will be interesting to visit it “before” and “after” the changes.
Directions
Meet at Hoylake Station (Carr Lane) car park, ready for a 10am departure.
On entering Station Road, Hoylake, drive past the railway station, cross over the level crossing onto Carr Lane, and the car park entrance is immediately on your right.

Free parking.
Hard paths most of the way and flat, but the Gilroy footpaths are grass, so may be a little muddy after heavy rain.
2.5 miles return walk, but you can retrace your steps at any point if you want to make it shorter.
Toilets at Hoylake Station. (Supposed to be for travellers, but ticket office told me they allow the public to use them).
There is also a cafe outside the station.
After lunch back at the cars, we can drive down to Hoylake prom to scan the beach over the high tide.
Also public toilets here at the bowling green (30p, card payment only), and Popsy’s Cafe.
