Lunt Meadows Nature Reserve

A great wetland site beside the River Alt.

Lunt Meadow Wetlands is a 75 hectare area of the River Alt flood storage scheme managed by the Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside Wildlife Trusts.  It consists of a number of pools and ponds surrounded by reedbeds and rough pasture and provides a habitat for numerous species of water fowl, ducks and geese. Lapwings are present in great numbers and thousands of Pink-footed Geese frequent the surrounding farmland.  Barn Owls and Short-eared Owls may be seen in daylight.

The car park is adequate but the site has no facilities.  There is one bird hide that may or may not be available. There are a number of screens and wooden benches around the footpaths but otherwise no shelter from inclement weather.  Paths around the area are level but wellingtons are strongly recommended as these may be muddy.

Directions

Through Wallasey tunnel out onto Scotland Road.  Follow A567 towards Southport. Turn left down Bankhall St then right onto Derby Road.  Follow this road up to Crosby where turn right following A565.  At second roundabout stay on A565 then after ¼ mile turn right into Long Lane towards Lunt. Turn right at the Give Way and then look for the site sign on the left (a few potholes coming up!).  Start looking for birds here.
