Flashes are lakes formed from mining subsidence. This reserve near Leigh is the result of extensive coal mining and colliery spoil, but is now a mix of habitats including freshwater pools, reedbed, woodland and the Leeds-Liverpool Canal (Leigh branch).
We should see a nice variety of birds. There is a network of paths with 8 hides (although I understand that Horrocks Hide was closed last week waiting repairs).
There is a brand new café with toilets.
Generally good paths.
Directions
The postcode WN7 3PA may take you to the Park entrance only – see instructions below.
Take M56 towards Manchester, then M6 north.
Exit M6 at Junction 22, and take 3rd exit onto Winwick Lane/A579.
After 1.8 miles turn right onto Newton Road/A572.
(N.B. Your satnav may take you right along the A580 here, you will just come to the park from the opposite direction. Turn right opposite the Fire Station).
Follow this road for 1.9 miles and the Country Park entrance will be on your left – opposite the Fire Station.
Ignore the first small car park shortly after entering the park, continue along the road until the end where you will find a large car park (opposite a golf course).
Look for brown signs when you get close.
