Booking is open for our coach trip to RSPB Old Moor – Saturday 5th July 2025.
This reserve is located in the Deane Valley near Barnsley and is focused on wetland habitat, with scrub and meadows too.
The journey to the reserve goes over the Woodhead Pass, giving glorious views of the moors and a chance of seeing Red Grouse.
At the reserve there is a Visitor Hub with a shop. Above these is a very nice café. Just outside is a feeding station with covered seating.
There are 2 main routes from the Hub. The first takes you to the Green Lane Loop, with 5 hides looking over the main Mere, Wader Scrape and Wath Ings Nature Reserve.
The other path takes in the Discovery Trail and Reedbed Path, with 3 more hides.
So it is possible to cover one half of the reserve in the morning before returning to Hub/Coach for lunch, and then explore the second half in the afternoon.
There are regular benches along all the routes.
The paths are very good, flat and well kept. One or two parts may be a muddy after heavy rain.
There are short rises to a couple of the hides, but all hides are rated as wheelchair accessible, so the reserve should be suitable for everyone.
The main species to look for are Bittern and Marsh Harrier, which nest here, Kingfisher, Avocet, Redshank, Spoonbill, Sedge and Reed Warbler plus many others.
The cost is £20 per person for a great day out. To enquire about booking, pick-up points etc., please ring Bill on 07795 148140 or email: wirralbirdclub77@gmail.com
