Good variety of birds on the river and Menai Straits.
The Spinnies, Aberogwen’s series of lagoons and surrounding habitat, managed by North Wales Wildlife Trust provide shelter and food for wildfowl, waders and smaller birds. The reserve is next to the estuary of the River Ogwen and the constant flow and ebb of the tides ensures a rich habitat of mudflats which attracts a wide variety of water birds. The lagoons, surrounded by mature trees and reed beds host many smaller birds which are further attracted by supplementary feeders at each of three bird hides.
Meet at 10.00 hrs. High Water is at approximately 11.00. There is adequate parking on the edge of the shore. Paths are reasonable and walking boots should suffice. The whole of the reserve is an easy walk. Apart from the hides, two of which are small and one less so (but they boast cushions!), there is no wet weather shelter. There are no other facilities. If required, RSPB Conway, with refreshments and toilets, is 11 miles away on the way home.
Directions
Take the A55 North Wales Expressway from Deeside. After about 52 miles of A55, having passed Llanfairfechan and its tunnels and two roundabouts, look for the turn off left to Tal y bont. Turn left off the expressway and immediately right. At the ‘Give Way’ turn right and pass over the expressway. At the next ‘Give Way’ turn right. Follow the road until the brown ‘information’ sign points you right towards the nature reserve. This road is narrow with passing places but leads eventually to the car park where we will meet.
